NEW on www.americanbuckingbull.com
We have added a section for some our most frequently asked questions to our website to provide answers about registration, DNA results, American Heritage Futurity, events, and more.
Reminders
• ALL 2008 born calves must be registered before December 31, 2008 or registration fees will be $250.00 per head if you wait until 2009. If you wait to register your 2008 born calves until 2010 the registration cost will be $500.00. These prices only apply to 2008 born calves and beyond (i.e. 2009, 2010, 2011. etc.). If you do not want to register all your 2008 calves you do have the option of cataloging them for $25.00 per head and then removed from cataloging to be registered at $40.00 per cataloged animal. Cataloged animals must be pulled from cataloging and registered before the end of their 2 year old year. If they are registered out of cataloging after their 2 year old year it will cost $500.00.
• Next sustaining payment for the 2009 American Heritage Futurity (AHF) is $200.00 and is due no later than September 15th, 2008. For the 2010 AHF the first payment for obtaining a position is $50.00 and is due August 15th, 2008. The forms for both payments can be found at www.americanbuckingbull.com under the AHF tab. If you are unable to obtain these forms from the website please contact the office and will send one to you via fax, mail, or e-mail.
American Heritage Futurity 2009 & 2010
The American Heritage Futurity (AHF) for 2009 is going to be another exciting event for American Bucking Bull, Inc. members. The 2008 payout totaled $361,249 with first place awarded $93,925. In the process of auditing AHF for 2009, we found that the number of animals nominated has decreased from 485 to 331 (nominated and paid according to the schedule). In comparison, the 2008 AHF began with 495 spots decreasing to 123 at the time of the event. If the trend continues, 2009 will resemble 2008 in the number of animals participating as well as the payout.
As we examined the process of nominating animals into the American Heritage Futurity, several issues arose.
1. As the breeder, be aware of the due dates and the requirements associated with the deadlines, as it is your responsibility to comply. The requirements for nomination include an ABBI DNA number, Herd Number and Bull Name. This is required with the March 15 payment.
2. Breeders may sell their spots and nominated animals in the AHF to other ABBI members. However, once nominated, the “spot” is associated with the animal and is not transferable to another animal. The ABBI does not recognize those transactions unless the seller notifies us in writing.
3. Late nomination is due on March 15. The current late fee is $2,500.00.
4. Entry form is required for the actual event. The entry form provides ABBI with the necessary information to facilitate the event production and proper recognition of the breeder/owner/partner of the animals.

A completed event entry form and final payment of $500.00 per nominated animal due in the ABBI office May 15, 2009. The late entry fee for the 2009 AHF is $15,000.00 and is due along with the completed entry form in the ABBI office May 15, 2009.
Initial payments for the 2010 AHF are due on August 15, 2008.

December 15, 2008 required
payment of $50.00 per spot.
March 15, 2009 required payment of $100.00 and nomination of the animal. The animal must have ABBI DNA number, herd number and name.
June 15, 2009 required payment of $200.00 per nominated animal.
September 15, 2009 required payment of $200.00 per nominated animal.
December 15, 2009 required payment of $200.00 per nominated animal.

Welcome Miranda Lee, Production Coordinator
We would like to welcome the newest addition to the ABBI family, Miranda Lee. She has recently taken on the position of Production Coordinator, taking on the role of Curt Blake’s counter part in the office. Her responsibilities will include, but are not limited to receive and process event entries, attending events to record points, process pay outs, and help out wherever necessary. Originally from Olney, Texas which is approximately 45 minutes Southwest of Wichita Falls, she graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Science this past May. She is also a member of “Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association”. Her family started raising bucking bulls in 2004 and will begin participating in events in the coming year. She has participated in the Bradberry Spring Spectacular since 2005 helping with the production of the event. We’re very excited to have such a great addition to our team. Welcome Miranda.
Update on New Members and Registration
Since the beginning of the year, we have registered just over 8,100 animals and have gained almost 500 new members. We are really excited to see this type of growth in the bucking bull industry.
“Failed Testing”: What Does That Mean?
Recently we have been getting a lot of questions about what the DNA Status “Failed Testing” means. When this DNA status is associated with an animal it means that the genetics lab we work with was unable to extract a usable DNA sample from the blood card that was submitted for that animal. There are several reasons that a DNA sample is unusable. A few of these examples are contamination, improper storage, too much or too little blood on the card, and twinning.
A sample can be contaminated with fecal matter, chemicals, medications, other animal’s blood etc., which can cause the breakdown of genetic material or distort the sample during processing. A blood sample should be allowed to dry and stored in a cool dry place. If the sample is stored in a hot humid area it has a greater chance of growing mold, which can destroy the DNA. Heat also plays a factor in storage. High heat and direct sunlight can damage the DNA sample, so you shouldn’t keep a sample in your vehicle. The best way to store
^__f=kÉïëäÉííÉê=gìäó=OMMU =
your blood sample is in a cool, dry, dark place and the samples should be completely dry before shipping them to us. Do not store the cards in plastics bags, the bags will trap moisture and possible contaminants in them and may lead to mold on the samples, just mail in a paper envelope.
When a blood sample is sent in with too little blood on the card the lab may not be able to retrieve a usable sample. On the other end of the spectrum a sample with too much blood (saturating the card) can also cause a sample to fail testing. They recommend a few drops of blood covering about half of the circle on the card.
Twinning can also be a cause for failed testing due to mixed blood. This means that at some point during pregnancy the calf was a twin, whether twins were born or not. Twins share blood during pregnancy and cause the blood sample from that twin to produce a mixed blood sample; in this case you will need to send in a hair sample. A hair sample must have a hair follicle (the bulb at the end of hair when it is pulled from the animal) to be a usable sample. This type of sample is genetically specific for that animal. We recommend a clean sample pulled from the tail, which has the largest follicle.
These are only a few reasons that a “failed testing” status can occur, but they seem to be the most common and most avoidable (except for the twinning). We hope this information answers some of your questions about the DNA status of “Failed Testing” and helps you to understand the process a little more.
